Furnace Signs That Indicate You Need To Call An HVAC Professional

Most homeowners know that having an annual Furnace Inspection is important to having a properly operating furnace. Though a preseason inspection enables HVAC technicians to catch and prevent most problems, some signs are not present during the inspection. Some common problems are undetectable during the inspection, but they will send homeowners signs later in the season.

Furnace Warning Signs should never be taken lightly, and should always be investigated. There are a few things that go wrong that homeowners can easily fix on their own. A dirty filter and Obstructed airflow issues are two things that homeowners can often fix without help. Vents that are covered and dirty filters will make a furnace struggle and make it hard to keep the home warm.

When a furnace continuously cycles off and on and does not keep the home true to the temperature setting of the thermostat, these signs may point to a faulty thermostat. Another thing to consider when a furnace is not working properly is the age of the furnace. Older furnaces occasionally need repairs to remain functional. A furnace that is between ten and twenty years old may need to be replaced to maintain fuel and energy efficiency.

Even though some of these warning signs are easy to detect and fix, there are many others that homeowners need to have a professional HVAC technician diagnose. A furnace that is making odd noises or emitting a noxious gas odor is a definite sign that it is time to call in a professional. These signs indicate there is something wrong that may result with the need for a repair. If a furnace starts to have a yellow or orange flame instead of its normal blue flame, it can be an indication that the burner is clogged with dirt.

A preseason inspection involves cleaning the burner, so if an unstable or yellow flame appears after an inspection a homeowner should shut the furnace off. The furnace should remain off until a technician can diagnose the problem. When first noticing noises, odors, or an unusual flame color, a homeowner should contact their local HVAC contractor immediately because these signs can indicate serious problems.
