How to Clean Your Heating System After the Winter Season

Proper maintenance is important if you are a homeowner. You need to make sure that all of the infrastructure in your home is working properly, so this is going to mean taking a look at the air conditioning, the heating and the plumbing system. From time to time, you are going to need to call in a professional to inspect all of these systems. When it comes to your heating, you should ideally have someone come in once a year to take a look at the boiler or furnace and to ensure that there are no issues with it. When the winter season ends, you will need to take a look at your system yourself and ensure that it is clean. A clean system will work more efficiently, so you will have to get down on your hands and knees and give it a good inspection yourself. This will ensure that the system is ready to start running again when the winter time comes around.

The Filter

The first thing you need to do is take a look at the filter. Filters are there to catch all of the dust and debris that generally gathers up when the system is in use. Most people are going to clean their filters at least once a month, but a lot of people forget this. If your filter can be properly cleaned, then make sure to do this. Otherwise, you may have to replace the filter by getting a new one.

Turn off the System

When you decide to get into the system itself, you will need to make sure that you have switched it off entirely. You do not want to endanger yourself, so make sure that all of the power is completely turned off. You can then start to take apart the components and check for dust and other bits of debris that could’ve gotten caught in the system. A lot of the time, you are probably going to have to clean out the ducts. Make sure to be careful when you are doing this.

Talk to A Professional

If you are unsure about whether or not you should clean the system, then the best thing to do is call in a certified HVAC professional. He or she will be able to take a look at the system and determine whether it needs to be cleaned. For simple things, you will be able to clean the heater or the furnace yourself. Some jobs may take extra work, and this is usually where it is a good idea to call someone up so that they can do a proper job. While it may cost you money, you will be able to get rid of all the issues that are slowing your heating system down.

You need to make sure that your heater is working properly for when winter returns. If you are in doubt about anything regarding the system, then do not be afraid to call a professional who can give you expert advice.
