HVAC Contractors Explain the Benefits of Heat Pumps

These days, you can find many options available for heating your home and each of these has its own benefits and drawbacks. One of the most frequently asked questions that HVAC contractors hear is about the comparison of heat pumps and other air conditioning systems.

In this article, we will discuss heat pumps and the advantages and disadvantages that come with this system.

How Heat Pumps Work

You’ll find a lot of HVAC contractors recommend getting a heat pump as a cheaper and more energy-efficient alternative to gas furnaces. Heat pumps work similarly to air conditioners in many respects, with the only notable difference being the ability to reverse the cooling process. During the summer, both systems capture heat from the warm air indoors and release it outside, causing an overall drop in temperature.

Heat pumps can reverse this process, however, and extract heat from outside and bring it in. Heat from the air in the atmosphere is lower during the winter but heat pumps still work, even in the cold.

Energy Efficiency in Heat Pumps

Almost all HVAC contractors will agree that heat pumps work well in temperate regions that do not experience drastic changes in the weather. Extreme differences between indoor and outdoor temperatures can actually cause air-source heat pumps to consume a lot more power than other heating systems. On the other hand, a geothermal heat pump draws heat from the ground and can provide a steady supply of heat even during cool weather.

Pricing and Availability

Because of the way they work, heat pump installation costs can vary among HVAC contractors. Pricing depends on the type of unit to be installed and the labor cost of setting it up. Geothermal heat pumps cost more upfront, but they save you a lot more on your monthly bills. Air-source heat pumps consume too much power during certain times of the year but are relatively cheaper than other types. These types must also be used in conjunction with other systems to supplement their heating capacity.
