Important HVAC Maintenance Tips for Spring

Spring’s here, which means that it’s nearly time to start using your air conditioner again in order to keep your home comfortable. Since it hasn’t been  used for months, you need to make sure that your air conditioner is in good condition. In today’s article, Cardinal Heating and Air, the top air conditioning repair company in our local area, discusses some HVAC maintenance tips for spring.

Keep the Drainage Hole Clear

Air conditioners usually have a drainage hole that’s located at the cabinet’s base, and this hole needs to be kept clear if you want the air conditioner to work effectively. A clogged drainage hole puts stress on the unit, which makes it work less efficiently. In addition, clogs can also form at the P-trap, which isn’t too far from the drainage hole. Make sure that the P-trap is clear as well before using your air conditioner.

Change the Air Filter Regularly

As the leading expert on indoor air quality in our local area, we highly recommend changing your air filter regularly. This simple action can have a big impact on the health of your HVAC system. A clean air filter can improve your air conditioner’s energy efficiency and help maintain good indoor air quality. The air filter’s job is to trap airborne particles like dust and pollen, which is particularly useful in the spring. Replace disposable air filters and clean washable filters monthly.

Remove Obstructions Surrounding the Outdoor Unit

It’s important to regularly check on your air conditioner’s outdoor unit because it’s exposed to the elements. Remove any loose vegetation and debris from around  the unit. You need to ensure that any plants surrounding the unit don’t grow within two feet of it. The outdoor unit needs this space in order to pull in the air it needs to control the temperature inside your home.
