Is A Ductless Split System Right For Your Home?

Although the have been popular in several countries in Europe and Asia for many years now, ductless split HVAC systems are just starting to make a splash in the United States. Ductless splits and multi-zone systems provide heating and cooling to areas where traditional equipment is too expensive or impractical.

Ductless systems work by completely eliminating the need for ductwork and registers, which can affect the efficiency of an HVAC system and make it unwieldy as well. Each system is self-contained, meaning it includes all components necessary for heating and cooling. Indoor fan coils come inside a small cabinet that may be hung on a ceiling or exterior wall. A separate condenser goes outdoors.

Ductless split HVAC systems are gaining favor with architects and engineers because these air handlers allow them additional freedom in building design because they are not encumbered by the restrictions brought about by ductwork. Placing air handling systems in strategic locations reduces noise, increases comfort and lowers power costs will also creating on-demand heating and cooling. These systems also provide advantages for new construction as ductless equipment eliminates rough-ins, thus reducing cost.

Installations usually span two days or less and provide minimal disruption of family lifestyle. Single zone units are ideal for additions, basement or garage conversions, media studios or similar areas that need extra heating or cooling.

For whole house installations, a single condenser with matching compressor circuits controls multiple air handlers, each of which as separate remote controls for comfort so that occupants in different areas can set temperature to meet their needs.

Ductless split systems offer homeowners a variety of benefits. These include:

  • Inverter technology allows regulation of compressors to assure that units provide the exact capacity required to meet needs, resulting in reduced energy costs. Ductless systems offer some of the highest SEER efficiencies among all models
  • Because they operate at lower velocities than traditional HVAC systems, ductless systems are quieter and offer better control
  • Hyper-inverters incorporated in some models allow these systems to provide comfort in when outdoor temperatures are as low as -13 Fahrenheit
