Troubleshooting Tips Against Common Heat Pump Issues

Like other parts of your home, heat pumps can have unexpected issues. If you think you’re having problems with your heat pump, air conditioning repair expert Cardinal Heating & Air has some troubleshooting tips to offer.

Your Heat Pump Is Blowing Cold Air

The unusually cold air coming from your unit can be due to an issue with the refrigerant charge, compressor or valve. But before checking, make sure your unit is set to the correct mode. Someone probably just changed it to AC mode or it’s somehow gone into that mode because it detected frost. If it’s for defrosting the unit (which makes it pump heated air to the outdoor unit to unfreeze it), you’ll only need to wait for 10 to 15 minutes until the defrost cycle is over.

However, if it doesn’t stop, or if you’re sure the AC mode isn’t on, consider the other possibilities first before assuming the worst. For instance, the coils get dirty over time, preventing it from releasing heat. Debris like grass, leaves, and such can also impede the airflow. Either way, it may only need professional cleaning and servicing from a trusted air conditioning and indoor air quality technician.

Your Heat Pump Isn’t Turning On

If the problem isn’t your thermostat, then a tripped breaker may be the cause of this issue. Check to make sure your breakers are all in the correct position. However, if this happens on an ongoing basis, it’s likely a sign of an electrical failure with the heat pump, so you should have it addressed professionally.

A faulty starter capacitor can also be the cause behind this type of issue. Try to listen to your heat pump; if you can hear a faint clicking noise that occurs as the heat pump is supposed to be turning on, it means your starter capacitor has a problem. This component transmits the electrical charge that turns on the motors. It might be damaged or broken if you’re hearing noises from it, so it’s best to have it repaired or replaced by your trusted technician.
