Should You Use the Blower Fan Without Running the AC?

An HVAC system keeps homes and workplaces comfortable throughout the year. That’s why people love their HVAC systems. Searing summers and freezing winters can make life miserable and even dangerous for some people, but cooling and heating systems make workplaces and homes comfortable in any season.

To ensure your HVAC system functions properly at all times, it’s important to schedule regular HVAC maintenance. Remembering good practices in HVAC equipment use also matters. One of the things you shouldn’t do is run your AC’s blower fan all the time when the actual AC is turned off.

Many people have different beliefs as far as running the blower without running the AC is concerned. The truth is, it’s fine to do it sometimes, but you can’t keep doing it without causing problems for your fan as well as your home.

Why HVACs Have a Blower Fan

HVACs have a blower fan to blow the air through the ducts, releasing the air into your home. Cool air blown into your home makes it more comfortable in the summer. Modern blower fans are highly efficient at distributing air.

Can You Use the Blower Without Running the AC?

You can, but the real question is whether it’s sensible or safe to do it. There are situations when running the fan alone is more energy-efficient. Whatever the situation, avoid running the fan without running the AC for too long.

If it’s relatively cool outdoors, and you want to get rid of the stuffiness in your home, run the fan without running the AC for a maximum of 15 minutes each hour. You can find have an automatic thermostat perform this function. This can make your home more comfortable and you’ll probably save a few dollars.

Don’t run the fan without running the AC for too long, though, especially if the weather is too hot. Your ductwork is probably in your attic or under the floor, and these areas get even hotter than your living spaces. If you run the fan at these times, it will only distribute hot air and make you feel less comfortable. Then you’ll have to run the AC longer or at lower temperatures to cool your home, using more energy.
